Tuesday, November 26, 2019Former running back for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Leroy Collins spoke with the middle and high school on how he was able to overcome adversity and set his eye on the prize … playing football in the NFL.

Mr. Collins shares with the Atoms his incredible story of how he battled back from injuries from a tragic automobile accident which left him wheelchair bound, and becoming victorious over life’s challenges. It was with his perseverance, can-do attitude, family and friends who helped him focus on the road ahead and achieve his goal of playing in the NFL.

Elementary Atoms welcome Executive Director at Redhouse Art Center, Samara Hannah who read to the students during story time

Wednesday, December 11, 2019It’s not every day that story time turns into a theatrical experience. But with the help of the Executive Director of Redhouse Art Center, Samara Hannah, she made the characters come to life. Students used their imagination and creativity when listening to the story, ‘Horton Hatches the Egg’ by Dr. Seuss. Imagination and creativity are just two elements that help make an incredible theater performance. Students were excited to learn more about theater and all that Redhouse Art Center has to offer. Thank you Samara, and Redhouse for sharing the wonderful world of theater and reading to the students.

Middle school hosted its November Student of the Month Ceremony

Friday, November 8, 2019It’s time to celebrate the middle school Atoms for all their accomplishments in the month of November. As a monthly tradition, the middle school hosts its Student of the Month Ceremony. Students are awarded certificates based on their hard work, various presentations in their specialty classes, as well as, demonstrating the monthly character strength. For the month of November, the character strength was Citizenship.

Sophomore Atoms Visit Colgate University

Sophomore Atoms visited Colgate University for a college visit

Thursday, November 7, 2019Rain or shine, sophomore Atoms visited Colgate University for a college visit. Students had the opportunity to participate in a campus tour and visit classrooms in the historic buildings, learn about campus life and of course experience first-hand the beautiful dining hall. Following the tour, Atoms attended an information session led by Associate Dean of Admissions, Erin Milin, who shared with the students information about the admission requirements, and the college history. Students also received official Colgate University swag - a t-shirt! Thank you, Colgate University for hosting the Atoms and sharing with them the history and tour of the campus.

Atoms Travel Back in Time to the 1800s

Fourth grade Atoms visited the Erie Canal Museum on a class field trip

Thursday, November 21, 2019The Erie Canal plays an important role in the history of Syracuse. Fourth grade Atoms learned about the rich history of the canal along with its importance not only in Syracuse but for the trade and travel. Students visited the Erie Canal Museum on a field trip where they where they were able to see how different life was in the 1800s, and were even allowed to board a model of a ship that would have traveled on the canal. Thank you Erie Canal Museum for such a dynamic hands-on experience.

Atoms Feel Better When Their Dancin'

Friday, December 13, 2019—A tradition at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School to participate in the making of a music video each year. Thanks to our friends at 325 Productions, this year our Atoms showed off their dance skills to the song, "Better When I'm Dancin'" by Meghan Trainor. While we pride ourselves in upholding a rigorous school environment, we also work hard to provide a balance of both academics and fun. It's with this balance that we continue to build success, one Atom at a time.

Chartwells K12 Serves Up a Surprise of a Lifetime

Tammy Pittsley, Director of Dining Services, received Chartwells K12’s National Scholarship to attend DeVry University

Monday, November 25, 2019This was not your average Monday for Director of Dining Services - Chartwells K12, Tammy Pittsley. With balancing a full-time job, a family and planning on attending college in the fall, there was a lot on her mind. Little did she know, she was about to receive a surprise of a lifetime that would make things just a bit easier.

Chartwells K12 recently launched their first ever scholarship program that would assist employees who were interested in earning their degree. After careful review, one National Scholarship Recipient was selected, as well as, three Partial Scholarship recipients.

The Chartwells team flew out to Syracuse, New York to surprise their National Scholarship recipient, Tammy, and present to her a full scholarship to attend DeVry University. High school Robotics team competed in the FTC Rochester qualifier and advance to the next round in the competition

Sunday, December 8, 2019High school Robotics team competed in the FTC Rochester Qualifier, and in true Atoms fashion won! With this recent victory, the Robotics team has qualified them for the next round of competition.

A Safari to the Rainforest is the 'Best Day Ever'

Middle school Atoms visit the Rosamond Gifford Zoo for a class field trip to learn about the rainforest

Thursday, October 31, 2019—Middle school Atoms dress for the fall and use their imagination as they embark on tropical safari to the rainforest at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Students learned about the rainforest and the various animals that inhabit its unique ecosystem, as well as, how it is important to their lives. While on their safari, Atoms were able to pet a snake, observed poison dart frogs, compared different skulls of animals and saw a variety of animals from other ecosystems. The Beat Goes On at an Ithaca College Field Trip

High school band members visit Ithaca College for a clinic with band director, Dr. Ben Rochford

Tuesday, November 12, 2019No treble makers on this field trip, only band members who want to sharpen their musical talent. High School band members visit Ithaca College for a clinic with band director, Dr. Ben Rochford. Under Dr. Rochford’s guidance he shared with students various techniques that would help them enhance their music ability, listen to the various instrument sections, and shared ways on how they can reach their optimal performance capabilities as an ensemble. Following the clinic, students observed the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble rehearse, took a tour of the campus and had lunch in the dining hall. Thank you Dr. Rochford and Ithaca College for hosting the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School Atoms for the day and your excellent music guidance.
