SAS Elementary Tour de Cure 2017

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, Evan O’Neill, a 2nd grade student with Type 1 Diabetes along with his family, friends and PE teacher, Mr. Kiggins, rode their bikes in the CNY Tour de Cure. Along with their ride, teachers from the elementary school including Ms. Peryea, Ms. Gielarowski, Ms. Williams, Ms. Chetwin, Ms. Wicks, Ms. Georgiadis and Mrs. Lattuca volunteered their time manning a rest stop on the 65 and 100 mile route. They themed the rest stop with Dr. Seuss, perfectly relevant for elementary school staff. With the O’Neill team Sugar Blue Eyes, the elementary school raised just over $800 toward the American Diabetes Association in the name of finding a cure as a part of their team total of $3,611! We are so proud of Evan for completing the ten mile ride and enjoyed a beautiful, warm day supporting the riders at Tour de Cure.

Monthly Olweus Meeting at the Middle School

On Thursday, June 1st, 2015 the Middle School held its monthly Olweus Anti-Bullying Meeting. This meeting was centered on "The Masks We Wear" and how we can all relate to situations where our true feelings and situations are hidden in plain sight. Students worked through situations where they work on identifying appropriate ways to mask feelings and relate to others in similar situations. The goal of this program is to take bullying out of the shadows in order to promote a healthy environment for all of our students. Students and staff are working together to promote the kind of environment that our students thrive in!

2017 International Fair at the Middle School

On Friday, May 19th, 2017  SAS Middle School held it's 2nd Annual International Fair. Students had been working for the past three months on three culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. Having students learn about cultures from around the world widens their world view and provides students an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries (and eating delicious food!). Our diversity is one of the biggest strengths of the Syracuse Academy of Science! Through out differences, we are stronger!

2016-2017 Art & Music Show at the Middle School

On Thursday May 18th 2017, the Middle School held its Spring Concert & Art Show. Under the direction of Mrs. Christina Cleason, our students came together to put on an amazing musical performance! Our spring concert theme was "Music from TV and Movies". The beginning and advanced bands played themes from well know TV shows and movies. Each grade level presented an outstanding choral performance of some of the top hits from movies produced over the last several years. This concert also featured three small group performances which were student created. Our spring concert was full of energy and lighthearted music, which made the evening a great success! In the art genre, Ms. Brett led an amazing show of student skill. Beautiful works of art were displayed showcasing their knowledge of the 7 Elements of Art as well as the 7 Principles of design. The students utilized multiple medias and techniques to create chalk pastel mandalas, mixed media cave art, colored pencil silhouettes, painted animal vectors, marker felt drawings, and painted waves to emphasize movement. The students were very proud to show off their artistic talent and hard work which made for a lovely evening full of lovely artists. The Arts are at the core of what we do at SAS with the leadership of these amazing teachers and the great work of the students under their direction!
