Sunday, March 6th, 2022—It was a buzzer-beater finish for the Syracuse Academy of Science high school Boys Basketball team as they took on New Hartford Spartans in the Section III Class A Finals tournament, held at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena. Both teams were evenly matched, and played with all their hearts. The game went into overtime, with a score of 65-61.

Game Day Stats

• Steyvon Jones led the Atoms with 34 points
• Makai Reed scored 13 points
• Zachary Allen scored 7 points
• Andre Pasha scored 6 points

New Hartford's Basketball coach, John Randall, said it best, "SAS should've been a two seed, not a ten seed. That's a very talented team. They gave us all we could possibly handle."

Monday, March 14th, 2022—Do you know what math's favorite holiday is?! Pi Day, of course! Below are some fun facts about Pi Day (3.14).

• The symbol for Pi has been in use for over 250 years. The symbol was introduced by William Jones, a Welsh mathematician, in 1706. The symbol was made famous by the mathematician Leonhard Euler.
• The Greek letter π is the first letter of the word periphery and perimeter. And as we all know, pi is the ratio of a circle's "periphery" to its diameter.
• Humans have memorized vast stretches of pi - 2015, Suresh Kumar Sharma set a world record when he successfully recited more than 17,000 digits of pi — a feat that took 17 hours to complete.

Friday, March 4th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science Congressional Awards students embarked on a trip of a lifetime when given the opportunity to visit the Nation’s Capital. Led by Mr. Yaman and Mr. Serkan, the Atoms soaked in all of Washington D.C.’s rich history, iconic monuments, historical sites, landmarks and museums.

During their trip, the Atoms visited the U.S. Capitol, the National Mall (the most-visited National Park), the Space Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and of course the historical Lincoln Memorial.

This historical and patriotic trip to Washington D.C. is always one our students will remember.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022—Oh, the Places You'll Go with the Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms ... especially on National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday!

To celebrate, the Atoms listened to classic Dr. Seuss tales and drew inspiration from the stories as they participated in STEM-related Seussical activities.

Upon reading the timeless tale, "Horton Hears a Who," the 5^th-grade students drew inspiration from Horton as they participated in the STEM Egg-Drop challenge. Like Horton, the students were to design a device that would protect their egg when dropped at multiple heights.

As we know in the Cat in the Hat, the Cat was fond of stacking many items to see how high he could go before they all fell. Inspired, the 6^th-grade Atoms rose to challenge to stack cups as high as they could go without making them fall. Meanwhile, the 7th-grade students listened to the timeless tale, "Oh the Places You'll Go," and had a meaningful discussion about their journey to come. Students also created parachutes to let their dreams fly high.

In addition to these Seussical STEM-inspired activities, Atoms listened to the story, "The Lorax," which has a central theme of respecting our environment and the creatures within it. Students were tasked with using their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills when given the hypothetical role of managers of a 400-acre forest. This activity allowed the Atoms to understand the impact of decisions about forest lands.

Not to be outdone, the Project-Based Learning (PBL) students celebrated National Read Across America & Dr. Seuss' birthday by creating mini-games or activities associated with their respective Dr. Seuss book.

Wednesday, February 16th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school’s 4^th-grade students participated in the time-honored Science Fair event. This event allows for students to share their understanding of the scientific method, flex their creativity, and demonstrate their presentation skills. Winners from the Science Fair will advance to the CNY Science and Engineering Fair hosted by the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST).

On the Science Fair Day, students presented their project to judges from local science organizations, colleges, schools, and hospitals. Parents and families were given an opportunity to view all these outstanding science fair projects and classrooms from Kindergarten through third grade.

Saturday, February 19th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science middle school students robotics teams have done it again! In mid-February, Syracuse Academy of Science middle school robotics teams Team Tag and SAS R Squad competed in the VEX Robotics Competition. This highly collaborative, teamwork event challenged the students to work together, communicate various strategies, and persevere. The Atoms had to set up, fix, and field the robots for each round to compete.

We are excited to share Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Team Tag, and SAS R Squad qualified for the finals. Team Tag placed 8^th and SAS R Squad placed 5^th and received the Judges Award (and trophy) for their impeccable teamwork skills and performance of the engineering book.

Sunday, March 6th, 2022—Slam dunk, it’s almost game day! As the Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms get ready to take on the New Hartford Spartans, here is some information to help you make sure you are game day ready.

The Section III Class A Boys Basketball Finals will take place on Sunday, March 6^th, at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena. Tip-off will begin at 5:00 PM. Tickets are $10 per person. Children 12 years and under are free when accompanied by an adult. The gates will open one hour before tip-off. We also ask that all students and their families please wear the school colors - white, navy, or burgundy. This will be a fun way to show our school spirit as we cheer on the Atoms.

If you are looking for something to do earlier on Sunday, come check out and cheer on the Utica Academy of Science Boys' basketball team as they take on the Chittenango Bears. Tuesday, March 1st, 2022—Be Bold. Be Unstoppable. Be Atoms!

Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms, a number 10 seed, created a major upset on the court after defeating the number 3 seed, Jamesville-DeWitt Rams, in the Section III Class A Semifinals game with a score of 53-43. This victory has officially allowed the Atoms to advance to the Section III Class A Finals, held on Sunday, March 6^th at 5:00 PM.

Below are some of the Semifinals game stats:

• Steyvon Jones scored a team-high 20 points
• Davon Perry scored 13 points
• Zachary Allen scored 12 points
• Makai Reed scored 8 points

With one win away from earning the title of Class A Champions, here is some information you'll need to know about the game on Sunday.
