SAS High Schoolers Let Their Creative Juices Flow at the Winter Concert & Art Show

Syracuse Academy of Science High School puts on Winter Music & Art Show

Monday, December 19th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science high school students had the chance to show off their artistic talents at the SAS HS Winter Music Concert and Art Show. Students from grades 9th through 12th art courses showcased their printmaking, mixed-media, ink, collage, and 3D art forms. Students even helped curate displays for the exhibition. Voice students who received vocal coaching from Ms. Carlson and guest artists performed solos and duets from diverse genres.

Band students played music they workshopped on a visit to Ithaca College earlier in the fall and music by conductor and composer Sean O'Loughlin. Mr. O'Loughlin visited students Friday to regale them with stories from working in the L.A. music industry and inspire them to learn and work hard in music and school. We enjoyed celebrating students' hard work this fall and welcoming the winter season with a reception sponsored by Wegmans following the concert.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2022:  An essential part of our curriculum here at SANY is preparing our students for college. Having the ability to enroll your child in college classes while they are still in high school is a great way to ensure they graduate with college-level credits! College visits are also important. Students enrolled in "ESF in the High School" courses toured the SUNY ESF campus. They got to see the entire campus and meet with admissions representatives. It was a great experience for prospective students to visit a college campus!

Famous Conductor Visits SAS HS Band Students

Symphoria Pops Conductor Visits SAS HS Atoms

Friday, December 16th, 2022: Band students and several other Syracuse Academy of Science high school atoms had the pleasure of meeting composer Sean O’Loughlin. Sean is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Victoria Symphony and the Principal Pops Conductor of Symphoria in Syracuse. As a conductor, he has worked with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, to name a few! Sean has also worked with famous musicians like Alicia Keys, Adele, Josh Groban, and Journey. Sean spoke to the students about how the path to becoming a successful composer was not linear and how he had to overcome challenges and setbacks before he got to where he is today.

It was a very motivational speech for our atoms, and the band students were happy to meet someone they aspire to be!

SAS 4th Graders are Taught how to Handle an Emergency

A Guest Speaker from Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications 911 Center Teaches SAS Atoms how to Handle an Emergency

Thursday, December 15th, 2022: Regina Morris from the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications 911 Center came to SAS Elementary School to speak to our 4th graders. Regina spoke about what to expect when you call 911, what questions they ask, and why 911 operators have to ask so many questions when someone calls. She also explained the difference between an emergency vs. a non-emergency and how to contact 911 through nonverbal means, the use of interpreter service, or TTY. The Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications' goal is for citizens of all ages to be well-versed in their role in ensuring an effective and efficient emergency response for themselves and their fellow citizens. We are very grateful for the valuable information that was shared with our 4th-grade atoms!
