Syracuse Academy Students Inspired at SUNY ESF Summer Science Camp

Syracuse Academy Charter School students spent a week immersed in environmental science and ecology activities through the SUNY ESF (State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry) Summer Science Camp from August 3rd to August 7th. Eleven SAS students attended the camp with 4 SUNY ESF supervisors along with SAS science teacher and program director, Dr. Ay. ESF SCIENCE (Summer Camps Investigating Ecology in Neighborhood and City Environments) is a weeklong day camp focusing on science and environmental learning. This includes both indoor and outdoor hands-on activities and online components as well. The camp covered topics such as local trees, energy usage, GPS, wind turbine engineering, animal habitats, water shed landscaping, pollution, water cleaning and stream analysis.

To expand on the students’ learning, the group had the opportunity to take a number of local field trips. The students visited SUNY ESF campus science labs, Green lakes for GPS study, invasive species education, Onondaga Lake for fish surveys and fishing, animal habitat, pollution, water cleaning, energy and landscape projects, and Edgewood Park for stream ecology. Students also went to the SUNY ESF campus to learn GPS mapping program and to participate in other fun activities such as giant bubbles and N-ice cream. The participants of the camp had a chance to have their SCIENCE Journals and they will share their newfound science knowledge during the SASCS Science Fair held in December. Parents will be invited to see what the students experienced and what they were able to accomplish during the program.

SAS would like to thank the SUNY ESF Camp coordinator Brandon Murphy, and his wonderful camp staff; Tim Pede, Kristina Macro, Jordan Bodway and Taylor Brown for organizing this very successful and fun summer science camp for SASCS students. We hope our students are able to have the same opportunity again next summer!
