MathCounts

MathCounts is the nationwide math coaching and competition program for middle-school students. It promotes student interest in math by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. The 2009-2010 chapter competition was held on February 6th, 2010.

MathCounts Competition Program

Eleven students participated in the MathCounts Competition Program in the Syracuse Academy of Science during the 2009-2010 academic year. Mathletes meet every Saturday Morning in the school. The team also took educational field trips during the course of their study.
   
Harvard and M.I.T University Trip  October 10-11th 2009

MathCounts and the Science Olympiad Team visited one of the best universities in the world on the October 10-11, 2009, weekend. The Harvard-MIT University trip was organized by our MathCounts and Science Olympiad coaches, Mr.Demiray and Mr. Jett. 
On Saturday the 10th, Burak Eskici, Ph. D., of the Harvard University Sociology Department gave a presentation about the school and its facilities. The MathCounts group had the privilege of holding their weekly session in an auditorium and classrooms at Harvard.
On Sunday the 11th, after a fresh walk on the beautiful Charles Riverside, our school teams visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Murat, a teaching assistant in the M.I.T Architecture Department, gave a presentation and showed the studio designs that M.I.T. students are working on for their architecture projects. 
After they walked the “Infinity Corridor,” at M.I.T, the team visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History.   

Corning Museum of Glass Field Trip

The trip was about experiencing how to make glass and engaging in teambuilding activities. Our team participated in several workshops and learned about how to make glass artifacts, how fiber optics works, how glass breaks and much more.  The MathCounts team with Mr .Demiray was also able to make glass ornaments in the museum. It was a great hands-on activity, through which they experienced the evolution of one of the most used materials in our lives.
  
Scavenger Hunt at the MOST Museum
The team visited the MOST Museum in Downtown Syracuse for a team-building activity. The scavenger hunt was prepared by Mr. Demiray in order to increase the communication skills of the team members. Students paired up and tried with a time limit to answer questions that were given to them. Everyone enjoyed the hunt and received a reward afterwards. The team watched an IMAX documentary movie.
  
MathCounts Camp
After studying for thirteen weekends and several hours on weekdays, the MathCounts team had an extended and intensified summary of the test during the three-day weekend, January 15-18, 2010. The team stayed in a convention center in Ithaca, New York.  The students had intense study sessions during the day and worked on team dynamics during the evenings. There were field trips to Cornell University campus as well, as two of the sessions were held in Cornell classrooms. The team also visited the Nanotechnology Lab at the university.
   
MathCounts Chapter Competition
The MathCounts team participated in the competition on February 6th, 2010, in order to be qualified for the state competition. Seven schools participated in this year’s competition. Our team represented the Syracuse Academy of Science and qualified for the state competition by winning first place.
 
MathContest 2010

The MathCounts team participated a two-day contest in New Jersey on March 19-20. Held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the contest involved several school teams and individual students. Our mathlete Magdhi Hiil took first place among the 85 participants and won a laptop computer.
