Middle School

Fifth Grade

Welcome to fifth grade at Syracuse Academy of Science. At our school, we want to create a safe, healthy, and enjoyable learning experience for all students. In fifth grade, students begin the transition of elementary students to middle school students. Our students will be prepared to enter middle school, academically, because of the high standards in all core subject areas. Students will begin to switch classes and keep a separate binder for each subject. Individual organization skills, for each student, will be developed through the use of a student planner.

Fifth Grade Math covers a wide variety of topics. In this course, students will study number sense (place value of whole numbers and decimals, computation skills, and decimals. We will dive into measurement, converting units in the metric system. Students will study the three E's of Algebra (exponents, expressions, and equations). Students will be asked to solve mathematical operations with fractions that have like denominators. Students will also use their knowledge of fractions to create proportions, rates, and ratios. Geometry is another major unit of study in fifth grade math. Finding the perimeter of geometric shapes, identifying types of angles, and working on the coordinate plane are the major skills that are required.

Fifth grade science will cover a wide variety of interesting topics that will help each student build a strong science foundation. Our science units include: How Scientists work, The Engineering Process, Cells to Body Systems, How living things grow and reproduce, Ecosystems, Energy and Ecosystems, Natural Resources, Changes to Earths' Surface, The Rock Cycle, Fossils, Earth's Ocean, The Solar System and Universe, Matter, Light and Sound, and Forces and motion. Within each unit, students will explore science through interactive, hands-on, labs. The class will be engaged with discussions, exploration, independent and group work, and experiments.

Fifth grade English Language Arts will cover New York State performance indicators in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Students will benefit from whole group and small group instruction, as leveled readers and centers are used to support students' learning. Students will study several different genres in literature through short stories and novels. Spelling, writing, and grammar skills will also continue to develop as students practice spelling grade appropriate words and follow the writing process to develop writing pieces.

Social Studies in the fifth grade focuses on the United States in the Western Hemisphere. Social studies students study history, geography, economics, government, and civics to help them become critical thinkers and responsible citizens in our American democracy.

In addition to the core subject areas, students will participate in special area classes, such as computer, physical education, art, and music. Students will be able to participate in a variety of afterschool clubs and activities, such as Intramurals, Math Olympiads, Science Olympiads, and Robotics. At Syracuse Academy of Science, we want our students to excel in both the academic fields and the fine arts.

Sixth Grade

Students in sixth grade will be prepared to enter middle school with the high standards in all core subject areas. In addition to academics, students are prepared to enter middle school by practicing daily organization skills, switching classes, keeping a binder for each core subject area, and using a locker between each class.

Sixth Grade Math covers a wide variety of topics. In this course, students will study number sense (place value of whole numbers and decimals, computation skills, and decimals. Another topic of study in math is measurement, learning about the units for capacity. Students will study the three E's of Algebra (exponents, expressions, and equations). Students will be asked to solve mathematical operations with a variety of fractions and mixed numbers. In addition, students will use their knowledge of fractions to create proportions, rates, and ratios. Geometry is another major unit of study in sixth grade math. Finding the area and volume, identifying congruency and similar shapes, and working on the coordinate plane are the major skills that are required.

In science, students will learn about concepts in four major areas-the nature of science, earth and space, life science, and physical science. The science curriculum covers a wide variety of topics will increase student knowledge about how the earth works as a system. The topics include: Exploring Planet earth, Earth's changing surface, Earth's Water, Weather and Climate, and Astronomy. Within each unit, students will explore science through interactive, hands-on, labs. The class will be engaged with discussions, exploration, independent and group work, and experiments.

Sixth grade English Language Arts will cover New York State performance indicators in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Students will learn and study different genres in literature, as the major units of study are: Fiction and Nonfiction; Short Stories; Types of Nonfiction; Poetry; Drama; and Themes in Folk Literature. Students will strengthen their writing and grammar skills as they develop writing pieces associated with each unit of study. In addition to the major units, students will also read a variety of novels, both as a unit of study, and independently.

Sixth grade social studies is a dramatic departure from the K-5 content of general social studies concepts and the history of the United States and New York. Sixth graders embark on a journey that begins millions of years ago and ends with the study of significant 20th century events. This immense time span is examined almost exclusively through the viewpoint of the study of the Eastern Hemisphere.
